What to look for in a personal trainer
Filed Under Ask the Trainer | 1 Comment
I find that the most important thing to look for in a personal trainer is good chemistry. Your trainer needs to understand your fitness goals just as much as you need to like and respect the training style. Once you’ve found a good fit, make sure the trainer also meets these criteria:
-
Certification – Look for national certifications from one of three organizations: 1) NSCA – The National Strength and Conditioning Association. 2) ACSM – The AmericanCollege of Sports Medicine or 3) ACE – American Council on Exercise.
-
Motivation – You want a trainer who will motivate you. The best trainers motivate without screaming. They get to know you and find out what motivates you.
-
Professionalism – You want a trainer who is professional. They should be at the gym before you get there. They should dress well and be in shape. They should be fully insured and ask you to fill out forms before your first workout.
-
Commitment – You want a trainer who is committed to the industry and training as a profession not as a job. Those who are committed to the industry stay up to date with the latest training techniques and continue to learn.
-
Partnership – Why you work with a personal trainer you are hiring a partner. They are not your employee and they are not the boss. They are a willing partner in helping you get in shape and reach your goals.

Who is writing this new blog? Well I am. I’m Nick Irons, an award-winning author, personal trainer and ultra-endurance athlete from Washington, DC. Below you will find more information about me and my qualifications for writing a blog like this. Enjoy:
Nick Irons knows about going the distance. He made national headlines at 25 when he became the first person in 70 years to swim 1550 miles from Minneapolis to Baton Rouge in the Mississippi River, and the first to swim it with the locks and dams of its “modern” form.
As an accomplished endurance and competitive athlete, Nick Irons and his team can help you accomplish your fitness goals.
Nick’s athletic career began as a High School All-American swimmer, after which he became an NCAA Division I level swimmer at Boston College. Soon after college, Nick became a coach for the master swim team, Southern California Aquatics (SCAQ), the largest adult swim team in the country.
However, the accomplishment for which he is best known began in 1997, when he jumped into the 56-degree water of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and took the first of more than a million strokes that pushed him down the longest river in North America. After four months and 1,550 miles of swimming, he climbed on shore in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Nick didn’t just make this swim for the challenge or the glory; but a personal mission to raise national awareness and funding for multiple sclerosis (MS) research, the disease his dad lives with. Nick followed up his swim with a 10,000 mile bike ride around the perimeter of the United States, also to benefit multiple sclerosis research.
Nick’s story has been featured on NPR, CNN, Good Morning America, The Montel Williams Show, and in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, USA TODAY, People, Triathlete and Fast Company magazines and a host of other national programs and publications.
Nick is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength Professionals Association (NSCA). This prestigious certification is given to a diverse group including strength coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists, personal trainers, physicians, chiropractors, researchers, and educators. It is awarded to individuals who possess the knowledge and skills to design and implement safe and effective strength and conditioning programs.
He is the author of the award-winning motivational book, Swim Lessons: Ten Secrets for Making Any Dream Come True, based on his experiences on the Mississippi, and has conducted motivational speeches across the country.
